Ibrahim Gökçek And Şirin Payzın Interviewed On CNN Before The Independent Turkey Concert (April 14, 2014)
IBRAHIM GÖKÇEK: we did not set a goal this year. The reason we don't set it is not because we can't reach it, but because we don't see the need. Because that number is growing every year, and we believe it will. So instead of saying that so many people will come, 550,000 last year, we believe that there will be a lot more of that on this Sunday.
Şirin PAYZIN: your friends from your group told me that we will find 1 million, Şirin, we are very assertive they said.
IBRAHIM GÖKÇEK: our target is already millions. We're clear about that, we already told you. We're moving forward with confidence. But instead of making such a clear statement as we said, we want to put aside the number debate and reflect on the quality there, the excitement, the goals and the feelings of the real people there.
Şirin PAYZIN: well now, you won't just be commenting on the group. There are other groups that support you. Who is there?
DILAN BALCI: There will be Ogün Şanlısoy, will be the Muhabbet Trio, Tolga Sağ, Cengiz Özkan and Yılmaz Celik. There will be a hip-hop group, Şanşer and Alef. In addition, there was a composition of The Artists' Council, called Van Uşümesi, that many artists in the clip will be there that day, that song will be sung together. A composition for the Van earthquake (in eastern Turkey).
Şirin PAYZIN: well now the name of the concert is independent Turkey concert. What do you want to say, what's your message?
IBRAHIM GÖKÇEK: what do we say? We call this country a dependent country. This country is dependent on imperialism, dependent on America, dependent on the European Union... As compared to your previous guest, we think the opposite. They have made us dependent from our economy to our politics, from daily life to cultural values. We say that if you cannot conduct your own economy, administration, culture, values, what you sow, what you reap and how you live, then independence cannot be spoken of in this country. So in these, in politics, in the way of life, in the way of self-expression, these people have to decide everything for themselves. But today our people cannot decide for themselves. They have become dependent. Addicted to poverty, addicted to corruption. Corruption in Turkey is increasing every day. Drug use, prostitution are on the rise. Every child born in this country is born with $ 2,000 in debt. People's rights are being debated for months for the three lira increase they want. Three lira! But on the other hand, it is very easy to pass laws and incentives when others want to. Imperialism does all this in its own way. How does it get this done? With the powers it established, through them... besides, our mountains are sold, our waters are sold, our forests are sold... The Plain of Konya has become a desert. Turkey was one of seven self-sufficient countries; now people buy their meat from Argentina, their wheat from Brazil, who could not produce their own tea, could not produce their own hazelnuts, could not produce their own tobacco, people broken by hunger and poverty have become a phenomenon again in Turkey. Imperialism is solely responsible and the only source of this, and that is why we call for “independent Turkey”.…
